What To Look For In A Good Mechanic

Perhaps you’ve moved locations and need to find a new mechanic who services your local area.  Or you may have need for a mechanic for the very first time.  Either way, finding a good, reliable mechanic can sound like pot luck, but it needn’t be difficult.  Here are a few simple tips for locating the right person to expertly service your car at a fair price.

Reputation is everything.  A good starting point is to obtain recommendations from friends or colleagues who live nearby.  What makes them feel their mechanic is good, and does this match your criteria? It’s a good starting point to continue your research.

One way of finding out more about your local mechanics’ reputation is to see if they have an online presence, and perhaps look for online reviews.

Another approach is to call or visit mechanics who service your area.  Firstly, ask to speak to them at a time when they are available to talk.  Ask them about their qualifications and experience, how long they serviced local customers, and importantly, ask about their long term repeat-customers.  Having many return customers, is a good indication that a quality service is being provided and the customers are well looked after.  Would they be willing to give customer references?  Perhaps some written references may be available from clients for you to see.

Look for good customer service skills – a mechanic willing to take the time to explain what needs to be done without overwhelming you with information.  They should communicate well and be clear on how much a job would cost.  Obtain this in writing if need be. Are they thorough?  Do they adequately explain what your options are?   Oftentimes, it’s good to have the work done directly by the owner, who understands it’s good business to look after existing clients in terms of level of service and fair price as customers are likely to use the service again in the future.
