⛽ There’s a filter tucked away on your 150 Series Prado that most owners never think about, and it can quietly cause a world of trouble if it’s left to fend for itself 🔧. We recently had one in the Perth workshop for a fuel transfer filter swap, and it’s a job worth talking about because it’s one of the most overlooked services on the Prado platform.
What Is the Fuel Transfer Filter and Why It Matters
The 150 Series Prado (and its 200 Series cousin) runs a dual fuel filter setup. The main filter under the bonnet does the heavy lifting, but there’s a secondary fuel transfer filter mounted on top of the fuel tank. Its job is to pre-filter diesel as it moves from the tank up to the main filter, catching contaminants before they reach the high-pressure injection system.
Because of where it lives, it’s out of sight and out of mind. Most owners have never even seen it, let alone replaced it. Toyota’s service schedule tends to focus attention on the primary filter, and the transfer filter gets forgotten until it’s completely clogged.
What Happens When It’s Neglected
A blocked transfer filter restricts fuel flow to the main filter, which forces the low-pressure lift pump to work harder. Over time you can see:
- Hard starting, especially when the tank is low
- Power loss under load or when towing
- Rough running and hesitation at highway speeds
- Premature failure of the suction control valve or injection pump
Given how expensive common-rail diesel components are to replace, a $100-ish filter is cheap insurance.
How Often Should It Be Changed?
As a general rule, we recommend swapping the transfer filter every 80,000 to 100,000 km, or sooner if you regularly fuel up in remote areas or run a lot of dusty tracks. If your Prado has clocked serious kilometres and it’s never been done, it’s overdue.
