What’s Actually Happening Inside a Corroded Bulb Socket
Vehicle bulb sockets rely on clean, tight metal-to-metal contact between the globe terminals and the socket pins. When moisture finds its way past a cracked seal, a perished grommet, or a damaged housing, it reacts with the copper and brass contacts. The result is that fuzzy green build-up (copper oxide and verdigris) along with white crusty deposits from heat cycling.
That corrosion creates electrical resistance. Even if the globe itself is fine, the current can’t flow cleanly, so you get symptoms like:
- Dim or flickering headlights, indicators or tail lights
- Globes that blow prematurely
- Lights that work intermittently, especially after rain or a wash
- Warning messages on the dash for bulb failure
- Melted or discoloured sockets from heat build-up at the bad connection
Why Replacing Just the Globe Isn’t Enough
Fitting a new bulb into a corroded socket is a short-term band-aid. The resistance is still there, which means the new globe runs hotter than it should and fails faster. Worse, ongoing heat can melt the socket, damage the wiring loom, and in some cases cause a fault code that affects other lighting circuits.
