Nothing says “we need to talk” quite like an oily patch on the garage floor. 🔧 A Ford Falcon FG rolled into our Perth workshop recently with exactly that complaint, and after a quick inspection it was clear the rocker cover gasket had given up the ghost. We pulled the cover, cleaned everything back to bare metal, and fitted a fresh gasket to put an end to the seepage for good. 👍
Why Rocker Cover Gaskets Fail on the FG Falcon
The rocker cover gasket sits between the cylinder head and the rocker (or cam) cover, sealing in the oil that lubricates the valvetrain. On the Ford Falcon FG’s Barra inline-six, this gasket is exposed to constant heat cycling, engine vibration and years of oil contact. Over time the rubber hardens, loses its ability to compress properly, and starts letting oil weep past the sealing surface.
Common symptoms include:
- Oil pooling on top of the engine or running down the side of the block
- A burning oil smell when the engine gets hot, especially after a highway run
- Oil drips on the driveway or garage floor
- Fouled spark plug tubes, which can eventually cause misfires if oil reaches the coils
How We Tackled the Job
Once the FG was up on the hoist, we removed the coil packs, intake components and any brackets in the way of the rocker cover. With the cover free, we thoroughly cleaned both the cover and the cylinder head sealing surface, making sure there was no old gasket material, sludge or oil residue left behind, which is critical for a leak-free seal.
Key Details That Matter
A gasket job is only as good as the prep and torque. We fitted a quality replacement gasket, checked the spark plug tube seals while we had access (a common secondary leak point on Barra engines), and torqued the cover bolts down in the correct sequence to the manufacturer’s spec. Over-tightening is a classic mistake here, it distorts the cover and causes fresh leaks almost immediately.
After a test run and a careful inspection, the Falcon was leak-free, the engine bay looked tidy, and the owner got their driveway back.
