Ford Ranger Charging Fault Diagnosed: When the PCM Is the Problem

Home » Ford Ranger Charging Fault Diagnosed: When the PCM Is the Problem

🔧 A 2014 Ford Ranger recently rolled into the Romano’s Automotive workshop with a charging system fault that had its owner well and truly stumped. The symptoms pointed to a typical alternator issue, but our diagnostic process uncovered something far less obvious — a failed charging LIN driver inside the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Here’s how we tracked it down and got this Ranger back to full health. ✔️

The Symptoms and the First Clue

The owner reported intermittent charging issues, warning lights on the dash, and that nagging feeling the ute might leave them stranded. Rather than guessing or throwing parts at the problem, we started with a full scan and pulled fault code U0120 — Lost Communication With Starter/Generator Control Module. That code was the breadcrumb trail we needed.

Diagnosing a Faulty LIN Driver in the PCM

Modern vehicles like the Ranger use a Local Interconnect Network (LIN) to allow modules and components — including the smart alternator — to communicate with the PCM. When the LIN driver inside the PCM fails, the alternator stops receiving the regulated charging commands it needs, and the entire charging system goes haywire.

Our Diagnostic Process

  • Scan tool analysis to confirm U0120 and check live data from the charging system
  • Voltage and signal testing at the alternator and PCM connectors to rule out wiring faults
  • LIN bus communication checks to isolate the failure to the PCM itself
  • Confirming the diagnosis before recommending replacement

Once the faulty PCM was confirmed as the root cause, we sourced and fitted a replacement unit, programmed it to the vehicle, and verified the charging system was operating exactly as Ford intended. No more warning lights, no more flat battery surprises.

Why Proper Diagnostics Matter

Charging faults are one of the most commonly misdiagnosed issues in modern vehicles. Too often, a new alternator or battery gets thrown at the problem when the real fault lies deeper in the vehicle’s electronics. A methodical diagnostic approach saves time, money, and a lot of frustration — and stops you ending up stranded in a Bunnings carpark on a Saturday morning.

If your Ford Ranger or any modern vehicle is showing strange electrical behaviour, charging warnings, or unexplained battery drain, get it checked before it leaves you stuck. Romano’s Automotive in Perth specialises in advanced auto diagnostics and proper repairs — no guesswork involved.
