On many Hyundai i30 models, this coupler uses a rubber-and-metal design that can perish over time, particularly in vehicles with higher kilometres or those exposed to heat and moisture cycles.
When the coupler starts to fail, the rubber breaks down and the metal splines begin to move independently. That movement is exactly what the driver was feeling, a clunk that travelled up through the steering wheel, especially over uneven surfaces or during parking manoeuvres.

Once the failed coupler was out, we fitted a new OEM-spec unit, torqued everything to manufacturer specification, and reset the steering angle sensor before a road test to confirm the clunk was gone and the wheel was centred correctly.
