What the Fault Codes Were Telling Us

Slow reservoir fill codes are the air suspension system’s way of flagging that the compressor is no longer keeping up with demand. The reservoir needs to reach a target pressure within a set time — when it doesn’t, the ECU logs a fault and often puts the vehicle into a reduced-function or fixed-height mode to protect the system.

With the boot trim removed and the compressor exposed, we hooked up the scan tool and ran live data. The pressure build times were well outside spec, confirming the compressor was on its way out. Common symptoms of this failure include:

  • Vehicle sitting lower than normal, particularly after being parked overnight
  • Extended compressor run times (you can often hear it labouring)
  • Uneven ride height across the axles
  • Warning messages on the dash referencing suspension fault or reduced ride quality

Why Compressors Fail — and Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Air suspension compressors don’t fail overnight. Usually it’s a gradual decline caused by worn piston seals, a tired motor, or — most commonly — a slow leak somewhere else in the system forcing the compressor to work overtime. That’s why proper diagnosis matters: simply replacing a compressor without checking for leaks in the air struts, valve block, or lines often leads to the new unit burning out just as quickly.

For this Range Rover, we performed pressure hold tests, checked the valve block operation, and inspected each corner for leaks before condemning the compressor.
