What Is Relative Compression Testing?
Relative compression testing is a non-invasive diagnostic method that measures how much each cylinder contributes during cranking. Instead of manually removing spark plugs or injectors and fitting a mechanical gauge to every cylinder, the tester reads the current draw from the starter motor as the engine cranks. Each compression stroke creates a small dip in starter current, and by comparing those dips across all cylinders, we can quickly identify which one (or ones) are underperforming.
It’s fast, accurate, and — most importantly — it saves the customer money. There’s no need to strip components before we’ve confirmed there’s actually an internal issue to chase.
Why It Matters for Diagnosing Rough Idle and Misfires
Symptoms like rough idle, persistent misfire codes, poor fuel economy, or a lack of power up hills can point to dozens of possible causes — ignition, fuel delivery, sensors, vacuum leaks, or genuine mechanical wear. Without proper testing, it’s easy to throw parts at the problem and still be no closer to a fix.
Relative compression testing lets us rule internal engine health in or out before we start diving deeper. In the case of the Astra, that 14% reading on cylinder B pointed clearly to a mechanical issue — likely a burnt valve, worn rings, or a head gasket concern — meaning we could give the customer a straight answer and a clear plan forward.
