A Suzuki Grand Vitara rolled into the workshop this week showing all the classic signs of a tired rocker cover gasket 🛠️. Weeping oil down the side of the head, crusty and flattened bolt seals, and that unmistakable burnt-oil smell after a decent drive. It’s one of the most common leaks we see on higher-kilometre Vitaras, and while it looks minor at first glance, a leaking rocker cover can quickly escalate into bigger problems if left alone.
Why Rocker Cover Gaskets Fail
The rocker cover gasket sits between the valve cover and the cylinder head, sealing in the oil that lubricates the camshafts, rockers and valve train. Over time, heat cycling causes the rubber compound to harden, shrink and lose its elasticity. Once that happens, the seal breaks down and oil starts to seep out along the mating surface. On the Grand Vitara, we also commonly find the small rubber bolt seals (grommets) around the cover fasteners have flattened out, which lets oil track down the outside of the engine.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Oil residue around the top edge of the engine or running down the block
- Burning oil smell after driving, especially when idling in traffic
- Visible smoke from under the bonnet when oil drips onto the exhaust manifold
- Low oil level between services without any obvious puddles on the driveway
The Repair Process
For this Vitara, we removed the intake components and ignition coils to access the rocker cover, cleaned every trace of old gasket material from both mating surfaces, and installed a fresh OEM-spec gasket along with new bolt seals. Torqueing the cover bolts to the correct spec is critical here — too tight and you’ll crush the new gasket, too loose and you’re back to square one. A quick run-up to temperature confirmed a clean, dry engine with no weeping and no smoke.

Rocker cover leaks aren’t dramatic on their own, but oil dripping onto a hot exhaust manifold is a genuine fire risk and can also contaminate ignition coils, spark plug wells and sensors. Catching it early keeps the repair simple and affordable.
