In this case, the previous “repair” had been applied directly to a damaged coolant passage rather than addressing the underlying failure.
The result? A ticking time bomb. Silicone patches on pressurised cooling components typically fail in one of three ways:
- Sudden coolant loss leading to overheating and potential head gasket damage
- Slow seepage that contaminates other components and hides the true fault
- Complete blowout under pressure, often at the worst possible moment

Once we identified the damaged passage on the Vitara, the correct approach involved removing the failed silicone, thoroughly cleaning and inspecting the mating surfaces, and assessing whether the component could be machined, resurfaced, or needed replacement outright.
Why Shortcuts Cost More Long-Term
We see it often: a quick silicone fix saves a few dollars today, but the follow-up bill usually includes a tow truck, a new radiator or water pump, and sometimes serious engine damage from overheating. Modern engines run tight thermal tolerances, and even brief overheating events can warp cylinder heads or compromise head gaskets, turning a small repair into a major rebuild.
Genuine gaskets, correct torque specifications, fresh coolant to manufacturer specification, and a proper pressure test after reassembly are the non-negotiables. That’s how you get a repair that lasts, not one that leaks in six months.
